"QUÈ EN FÈIEM, DE LA BROSSA?" The old waste landfills in Ribera d'Ebre

The DOW/URV Chair of Sustainable Development and the Centro de Estudios de la Ribera (CERE) have organized an exhibition on the domestic waste landfills which were in operation in several villages in the region of La Ribera d'Ebre during the second second half of the 90's, XX century. This exhibition, which has also received assistance from the Department of Geography, is the result of a research project led by Dr. Òscar Saladié, Professor at the Department of Geography and contributor to DOW/URV Chair for Sustainable Development. The project was supported by the Institut Ramon Muntaner and the CERE.

The waste was transported to a land, temporary qualified as landfill municipal, generally situated on the outskirts of towns. Environmental criteria were not always taken into account when choosing them as a waste disposal site. The waste was dumped in these areas and, occasionally, it was covered with earth, open burning, or simply trapped.

The objectives are:

• Locate the municipal landfills from the Ribera d'Ebre which were operational until the waste was transported to the county landfill.

• Analyze the characteristics and management of waste is carried out.

• View the current status of the sites.

• Publicizing the existence of old landfills to raise awareness on waste issues and the importance of proper management.

The exhibition consists of a dozen rollers that gave it an important dynamism in order to be received in all those towns in the region concerned and also to different campuses of the URV.

• April 13th - 16th, 2012: La Torre de l'Espanyol - Town Hall Auditorium (Picture 9).
