Eduardo Luis Menéndez Spina was born in Buenos Aires in 1934 to an Asturian father and an Italian mother. He graduated in Anthropology at the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) in 1963. His relationship with the field of mental health in medical anthropology started in 1966. His research career has been focused on cultural epidemiology and the process of health, illness and care; the theoretical development of ethnographic materials; alcoholism and its relation to violence in Mexico, and the problem of anthropology on the twentieth century.
His relationship with the URV began in 1984. Since 1994 he has been taught the master’s and doctoral courses in Medical Anthropology. Since 2006, he has been a professor on official master’s course in Medical Anthropology and International Health. He is currently supervising several doctoral theses.
He is a researcher at the CIESAS (Research and Study Centre in Social Anthropology) of Mexico, one of the international points of reference in social anthropology. The memorandum of understanding that exists between this institution and the URV was made possible largely thanks to Dr. Menéndez.
