"La ciència a la plaça" 2010: Outreach activity developed by EMaS
The aim of this activity is to promote public awareness of some representative examples of the research
carried out at EMaS by means of theater representations
of scientific discoveries, principles, and applications, a methodology that has had great success in TV.
The Research Center EMaS has designed and developed 2 activities related to their research tasks,
devoted to the study and development of new materials with different applications. The activities are:
- - Superconducting materials and superconducting levitation.
- - How does an alcoholmeter work?
This action consists of two separate activities:
- - Scientific outreach booth of the proposed themes: in the booth, which is instaled in a town's aquare
early in the morning, there are 2 interactive workshops related with the proposed scientific themes. The
workshops take place during all morning.
- - Theater representation of the proposed themes: a theater group of 2-3 members performs 5-10 minutes
representations that explain at a basic level the principles and applications of the scientific
themes proposed.
This activity was performed on Saturday mornings (from 10:00h to 14:00h approximately) of the months
of May and June is a centrally situated square of several towns in the Tarragona province: Tarragona,
Reus, Valls, Tortosa, and El Vendrell.
It is the first time that this type of initiative has been carried out in the province of Tarragona.
The activity has had great success in its objective of approaching present research to society in general,
represented in this case by the diversity of town pedestrian on a Saturday morning.
Participation of EMaS in the "Setmana de la Ciència" 2008, 2009, and 2010
The Research Center on Engineering of Materials and micro/nanoSystems, EMaS, has participated in the three
last editions of "Science Week", that have been celebrated during the month of November in
2008, 2009, and 2010.
The participation of EMaS has consisted on a booth for public outreach of the research acticities
of the different groups that form EMaS. Precisely, EMaS presented 7 different activities:
- - Activity 1. Catalytic Materials for Environment: Car Catalysts
- - Activity 2. Laser crystals
- - Activity 3. Superconducting materials and superconducting levitation
- - Activity 4. A crystal which autodoubles frequency
- - Activity 5. Comunications with laser diode
- - Activity 6. Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDS) and light bulbs
- - Activity 7. How does an alcoholmeter work?
Participation of EMaS in the "Saló de l’Ensenyament" 2009, 2010, and 2011.
The Research Center on Engineering of Materials and micro/nanoSystems, EMaS, has participated in the "Science
and Technology Space" within de "Education Exhibition" in its three past editions, celebrated during the
month of March in 2009, 2010, and 2011. EMaS accepted the invitation to represent the Rovira i Virgili University
in this exhibition.
EMaS ha participated in the exhibition with some of the activities also presented in the "Science Week" exhibition,
choosing among them depending on the theme of this space in each edition. In each of the years EMaS has
contributed with 2-3 of the following activities:
- - Activity 1. How does an alcoholmeter work?
- - Activity 2. Catalytic Materials for Environment: Car Catalysts
- - Activity 3. Superconducting materials and superconducting levitation
- - Activity 4. LEDS and light bulbs
